| Lago Apanas is an anglers paradise that is virtually untouched. The lake is 12 miles long and covers an area of 20 square miles, there are almost no motorboats, and sports fishing is unheard of. This manmade lake was created in 1964 by damming the Tuma River.
Submerged in its waters are ancient forests, creating the perfect habitat for Rainbow Bass (Wolf Cichlid) and Jaguar Cichlid. Actually, neither fish is a bass, but both are similar to bass in appearance and behavior. Like the bass, they have large mouths, stocky build, and they are very aggressive fighters. Locally the Rainbow Bass is known as the Guapote Lagunero, the Jaguar Cichlid the Guapote Tigre. Recently, the world record Guapote was caught on Apanas, a giant 26-pounder.
Other game fish found in the lake are Tilapia and Catfish.
